The basics

Coverage for you and the people who depend on you.

Individual health insurance is coverage you choose outside an employer group plan. An application can include you, a spouse or domestic partner, and eligible dependents.

We help you compare plans around provider access, prescriptions, expected care, financial help, and the total cost of coverage.

Who often needs it

Self-employed people People between jobs Part-time and contract workers Families without group coverage Early retirees under 65 People aging off a parent’s plan

Coverage paths

Choose the coverage path that matches your needs.

Start with medical coverage, then add dental or vision benefits when they are not included in the health plan.

Compare plans

Five questions to answer before choosing coverage.

A useful comparison goes beyond the monthly premium and starts with how you expect to use the plan.

  1. 01
Are your doctors and hospitals in the network?Confirm the exact plan network with both the carrier and provider.
  2. 02
How does the plan cover your prescriptions?Check the formulary, drug tier, pharmacy rules, and prior authorization.
  3. 03
What could you pay over a full year?Compare premiums with deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and the out-of-pocket limit.
  4. 04
How much care do you expect to use?Consider routine visits, specialists, planned procedures, and ongoing treatment.
  5. 05
Could financial help change the comparison?Covered California determines eligibility using household and coverage information.

Enrollment timing

When you can enroll depends on the calendar—or a life change.

Annual window

Open Enrollment

Covered California provides an annual window to enroll, renew, or change plans. Dates and effective-date rules can change, so verify the current deadline before selecting coverage.

After a major life change

Special Enrollment

Losing coverage, getting married, having or adopting a child, or moving may open a limited enrollment window. The deadline depends on the qualifying event.

FAQ

Common individual health coverage questions.

Browse all Individual Health FAQs
Is Covered California the same as an insurance company?

No. Covered California is the state marketplace where participating private insurance plans are compared and where eligible households can receive financial assistance.

Can I enroll outside Open Enrollment?

You may qualify after a major life event such as losing other coverage, marriage, birth or adoption, or a qualifying move. Most events have a limited deadline, so review your timing promptly.

Should I choose the plan with the lowest premium?

Not automatically. Check provider networks, prescriptions, deductible, copays, coinsurance, and the out-of-pocket limit alongside the monthly premium.

Does working with Skyline Benefit increase my premium?

No. You pay the same plan premium whether you enroll with our help or directly. Insurance carriers generally compensate the agency.
