SCAN vs. Kaiser Medicare Advantage in California
The most useful starting question is not “Which carrier has more extras?” It is “Where would I receive care, and could I keep the doctors I want?”
Compare the exact SCAN and Kaiser Permanente Medicare Advantage plans available in your ZIP code for the same year. This guide explains how to compare; it does not announce 2027 benefits or rank either carrier as best.
Start with how you receive care
Kaiser Permanente offers Medicare HMO coverage in California. Its Southern California guidance directs members to its provider directory and notes that some specialists may require a referral. Check your regional plan's rules rather than assuming every service is available without referral. Kaiser plan information, provider access.
For SCAN, verify your primary care doctor, medical group, specialists and hospitals against the exact plan. A provider relationship under one plan does not automatically carry over to another. Start with SCAN's plan search.

When might each be worth exploring?
If your priority is keeping doctors outside Kaiser, first verify whether those doctors participate in a SCAN option. Do not assume SCAN includes every independent doctor or hospital.
If you already receive care through Kaiser and want continuity, check whether a suitable Kaiser Medicare plan preserves access to your care team. Also review costs, prescriptions and any changes to your current arrangements.
If you are comfortable changing doctors, compare appointment locations, travel time, specialist access and prescription arrangements before deciding. A lower premium or an extra benefit may not outweigh a care arrangement that does not suit you.
Before changing plans
Confirm your enrollment opportunity and effective date. If changing care teams, ask how records, ongoing treatment, prescriptions and any required authorizations will be handled. Do not assume an existing authorization transfers automatically.
Compare medical copays and the applicable medical out-of-pocket limit, plus premiums and prescription costs. Dental, OTC and other extras have plan-specific limits and eligibility; they should not substitute for checking your care needs. Medicare's plan-type comparison.
