HSA-Eligible Individual Health Plans

Confirm that the exact plan is HSA-eligible, then compare its network and total costs before enrolling.

Start here

A clear comparison starts with the current facts.

Starting January 1, 2026, Bronze and catastrophic individual plans available through an Exchange are treated as HSA-compatible even if they do not meet the usual HDHP limits. IRS guidance also addresses qualifying off-exchange coverage. Plan compatibility does not automatically make you eligible to contribute: other coverage and Medicare enrollment still matter.

Verify the exact plan designation

Check the plan year and individual-market product. Apply the expanded 2026 Bronze and catastrophic rules where eligible; for other plans, confirm the usual HSA-qualified HDHP requirements. Do not apply this individual-market exception to every employer Bronze plan.

Review the complete care fit

Compare the deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, provider network, prescriptions, urgent care access, and total expected cost—not just HSA eligibility or premium.

Check household eligibility separately

Other coverage, Medicare enrollment, a general-purpose health FSA, and household circumstances can affect HSA contribution eligibility. Use current IRS guidance for the tax rules.

Important

Use the official program decision for eligibility.

Skyline Benefit can help compare health plan choices. Covered California, Medi-Cal, your employer, and tax authorities determine eligibility, financial assistance, and tax treatment.
