Here are just a few common questions people ask about Medicare:

I am a new immigrant and turning 65.  Am I eligible for Medicare?

Any U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident (has resided in the U.S. for five years or more) who is age 65 years or older and met the work requirements is eligible for Medicare. To receive premium-free Part A benefits through Medicare, a legal resident must earn 40 work credits. The work credits are ordinarily accrued over the course of 10 years of paying payroll taxes through an employer.  Without the 40 credits, they can still receive Part A coverage but will have to pay a monthly premium.

Permanent residents under 65 can also be eligible for Medicare if they have qualifying disabilities and meet the requirements necessary to get SSDI benefits.
New immigrants who do not meet residency and eligibility requirements are not eligible for Medicare until these conditions are met.

I am happy with my current Medicare. Do I need to do anything?

No action is necessary if you are satisfied with your current coverage.
So your current benefits will automatically renew for the following year.

I have Medicare Parts A and B. What are Part C and D?

Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is a combination of Part A and Part B and must cover nothing less than all the services covered under Original Medicare Part A & Part B.  This type of coverage is provided by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. The most popular Medicare Advantage plans are HMO and PPO plans offered by network providers. Most of these plans cover prescriptions and can include vision, dental, and hearing coverage.

Part D covers prescription drug benefits through private, stand-alone plans, often referred to as PDPs.
Many Part C plans also include Part D coverage.
If you  have traditional Medicare and need drug coverage, you can enroll in a Part D plan during Open Enrollment.
If you are currently enrolled in a Part D plan, you can elect to change your drug plan through December 7, 2020, which is the last day of the open enrollment period.
