2027 Medicare Advantage Plans in California: 5 Checks
Looking for the best 2027 Medicare Advantage plan in California? There is no single plan that fits everyone. A plan that works for a neighbor may not include your doctor, cover your prescriptions the same way, or be offered in your ZIP code. Compare the actual 2027 plan documents for your address and health needs, not just a carrier name or an advertised extra benefit.
This guide is a way to compare plans—not a ranking of 2027 insurers. Plan-specific premiums, provider networks, drug lists, and extra benefits must be checked in the current plan materials and Medicare Plan Finder when the 2027 options are available.
1. Compare the full yearly cost, not only the premium
A Medicare Advantage plan may advertise a $0 additional plan premium, but that does not mean all care is free. Check your Part B premium, any plan premium, medical deductible, copays or coinsurance for the services you expect to use, and the plan’s annual maximum out-of-pocket amount for covered medical services. Then consider the separate costs of prescription drugs.
Put two or three plans side by side using the same expected doctor visits, hospital care, and prescriptions. The plan with the lowest monthly premium may not have the lowest total cost for you. The medical out-of-pocket maximum is not the same as the Part D prescription-drug limit.
2. Verify your doctors and hospitals in the exact plan
Provider networks can vary by carrier, plan, county, and year. Ask whether your primary doctor, specialists, preferred hospital, and medical group participate in the specific 2027 plan you are considering. Check both the plan’s current directory and the provider’s office; if they disagree, ask the plan to confirm before enrolling.
Also review whether a referral is required and what happens when you seek non-emergency care outside the network. Our 2027 doctor-network checklist goes deeper on this step.
3. Enter your actual prescriptions and pharmacies
If the plan includes Part D drug coverage, check each medication’s formulary status, tier, deductible, copay or coinsurance, restrictions, and cost at your preferred pharmacy. A drug being “covered” does not guarantee the same price at every pharmacy or in every plan.
CMS set the 2027 defined-standard Part D deductible at $700 and the annual out-of-pocket threshold for covered Part D drugs at $2,400. A particular plan may have a lower drug deductible or different cost-sharing. These Part D figures do not replace the Medicare Advantage plan’s separate medical out-of-pocket maximum. Use Medicare Plan Finder with your own drug list for a more useful estimate.
4. Understand the plan type and care rules
An HMO generally expects you to use its network for non-emergency care, while a PPO may cover some out-of-network care at a higher cost. Referral and prior-authorization requirements can also differ. A special needs plan (SNP) has additional eligibility rules. Do not choose on the HMO or PPO label alone—read the specific plan’s Evidence of Coverage.
For a focused explanation, see our 2027 Medicare Advantage HMO vs. PPO guide.
5. Check extra benefits after the essentials
Dental, vision, hearing, transportation, and other supplemental benefits may be useful, but limits, eligible providers, and approval rules vary. Confirm what is included, how much you can use, and whether the benefit is available in your area. A generous-sounding extra benefit should not outweigh an unsuitable doctor network, drug coverage, or total cost.
Already enrolled? Start with your Annual Notice of Change
Your current plan sends an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) in the fall. Use it to identify what will change next year, then compare the current plan with alternatives. Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7; changes made during that period generally take effect January 1. Someone enrolling in Medicare for the first time may have a different enrollment period. See our 2027 Medicare enrollment-period guide before assuming the annual window is your only option.
If you are considering leaving Medicare Advantage for Original Medicare and adding Medigap, check Medigap enrollment rights and availability before making the switch; a Medigap policy is not automatically guaranteed in every situation.
