Plan G Extra OTC and optional dental
Plan G Extra includes an OTC items benefit.
Eligible California Plan G Extra members may place up to two OTC orders per calendar quarter. The allowance varies by plan, unused amounts do not roll over, and this benefit is not included with every Medicare Supplement plan.
Which Blue Shield Medicare Supplement plan includes the OTC items benefit?
The 2026 OTC catalog identifies Medicare Supplement Plan G Extra as eligible for the OTC items benefit. The catalog does not list Plan F Extra, standard Plan G, or Plan N as eligible for this benefit.
How often can a Plan G Extra member use the OTC benefit?
The benefit may be used for up to two orders per calendar quarter, up to the plan allowance. The allowance amount depends on the plan, unused amounts do not carry into the next quarter, and an order cannot exceed the available benefit amount.
How are OTC items ordered and delivered?
Members may order approved items online through their Blue Shield member account or by calling CVS OTC Health Solutions at 1-888-628-2770 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific. Orders ship by UPS at no cost. The catalog says most orders arrive in fewer than five business days, while Blue Shield advises allowing up to two weeks before following up on an order.
Is dental coverage included with a Blue Shield Medicare Supplement plan?
No. Dental PPO 1000 and Dental PPO 1500 are optional, separate dental plans. A new Medicare Supplement applicant may select one on the Medicare Supplement application. Current members and dental-only applicants use a separate dental application.
How much do the optional dental plans cost and cover?
For rates effective July 1, 2026, the brochure lists $42.00 per month for Dental PPO 1000 and $62.30 per month for Dental PPO 1500. Both have a $50 calendar-year deductible. Their calendar-year maximums are $1,000 and $1,500, with lower amounts available for non-network dental care.
Do the Blue Shield dental plans have waiting periods?
There is no waiting period for checkups, cleanings, fillings, X-rays, or other basic services. Major restorative services generally have a six-month waiting period, which may be waived with proof of prior comprehensive dental coverage.
What affects Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plan G rates in California?
Blue Shield Plan G premiums can vary by age, California rate region, tobacco status, ZIP code, effective date, eligibility, and available discounts. Request a personalized rate for your location before applying.
